Below is a list of frequently asked questions regarding these courses. You may want to have a read before seeking more information; your question might be included.
Which class should I enrol in? We would recommend you start at the introductory level. However, if you have some previous Auslan experience contact us and we can assess which class is best for you.
Do I have to pay the full amount up front? We do have a direct debit option, but it is only through your credit card. You will need to fill out a form "Direct Debit Agreement" and pay half of the course fee when you enrol via credit card. 2 weeks after the commencement of your course, the remaining half of the fee will be debited from your credit card by Deaf Can:Do.
My child would like to learn, Is that OK? We are happy to have children in the course, depending on the age. Well behaved children of 11/12 upwards – are fine. Parents can accompany them on the first lesson to help settle them in. Make sure that you are there to drop them off and pick them up. The price for children is the same price as the concession - $118.00.
Can I do two courses at the same time eg Talking Hands 2 and 3? This is not advisable. You will find that you will become confused as the courses are designed to build on each other, so assumed knowledge in Talking Hand 3 may have not yet been taught in Talking Hands 2. You may also find it difficult to keep up, which will limit your capacity to learn a purely visual language. The courses are run consecutively, so you will be able to do the following course straight after the first course. This is the best way of building on your knowledge and understanding.
What will I receive as part of the course? You will receive a Student Workbook to keep with you. It will include all the overheads the teacher uses throughout the course, as well as note paper, exercises, information about the content of the following course, information about events taking place, evaluation sheets and volunteer forms etc. Along with the workbook, you will receive a DVD for revision purposes. At the end of each course you will receive a certificate of attendance and a graduation event will take place.
